Background
Many people are looking for good films or books either for themselves or their families. I have rented or borrowed hundreds of films and books, done searches online and many times just pick up films and books at random just because they look interesting. The "hit-ratio" or the success of these picks is very low, perhaps less than one percent. So what is the alternative?
Although there are databases with thousands of reviews and critiques, by far the best way I have find out about "good media" is through word of mouth. One of my popular questions to friends in the San Francisco bay area is, "have you seen or read something inspiring or thought provoking or just something you would recommend?" Sometimes I’ll pose a similar question to a friendly but complete stranger I’m standing next to at the library or sitting on an airplane. Time and again these recommendations usually prove themselves.
I have been fascinated by film and books. I love to share what I find to be good (and the rest there’s no reason to cover it or critique it, I don’t have the time or resources). I have spent the last couple of years trying to put together various lists and have been doing a media reviews online as for newsletters and magazines.
"What is good?" I’ll address this later for different media, but generally anything that is considered decent, moral, and inspiring.
The purpose of this site is to share with you the media I or others in my circle have recommended. It’s a small effort but I hope it grows with time and with your suggestions and help we can share and help inspire our communities and society at large. You don’t have to agree with everything that’s included here, but as long as there is greater good and benefit that’s all I care. If you can share this with others I would really appreciate it.
