Shalizeh Arefpour directs this wonderful love story between an Iranian girl and an Afghan boy, which featured at Cinequest 2010. Mahi is the only daughter of a couple who live in a village with their sons and grandfather. She attends high school in another town and meets up with Heiran an Afghan worker. She falls head over heels for Heiran, even with her fathers objections, she is determined to be with him. Her support comes from the grandfather who once he sees she is so determined accompanies her to Tehran to find Heiran. There the couple get married, and are awaiting their first child, when problems start mounting. Heiran is not legal and as the authorities clamp down, he disappears. This is pretty analogous to INS raids in the US, where once caught people are deported. Mahi goes from prison to prison, looking for Heiran, with baby in her arms. Eventually she goes to the border and this is the last time she gets to see Heiran as he is deported. The film is beautifully made, the actors are in character, and some of the scenery is beautiful. This is great debut by Ms. Arefpour and another wonderful addition to women directors in Iran.
