Captain Abu Raed is a story that follows a poor airport janitor who creates a persona of a pilot to the neighborhood kids in Aman, Jordan. This is a non-political and very touching film that was Jordan’s first feature film in a long time that was its entry to the Academy Awards. It has also won numerous awards including Sundance. I won’t give the plot away but the director, Amin Matlqa has made a film that has cross-over appeal to both western and middle-eastern audiences. Even in the most dramatic scenes, he gets the message across without showing violence. The use of gestures and music is used in a wonderful way, where nothing needs to be said. I watched the film with director and producer commentary, which is very insightful. A must watch for all.
