Nicholas Griffin, the author takes the reader through a journey through the historic and troubled Caucasus. Like the Balkans this area has come under outside occupation and control over the centuries, in this case namely by the Russians. Part of the journey centers on Imam Shamil a Chechen Muslim warrior in the early 19th century who resisted the Russians. The Chechens are a strong and independent people have fought occupation over the last 200 years, and this book shares their background. Chechnya has been more recently in the news in the last couple of decades with Russian invasion and the Chechen struggle for independence. This book is an easy read and provides good historical and cultural context to the conflict.
